Metro celebrates 50 years of impact – looks to the future

As Metro continues to commemorate reaching its 50 years of service in 2023, a single word captures the spirit of the milestone: “impact.”

Throughout 2023 and into 2024, Metro has been highlighting its impact on the community since 1973; celebrating its critical role in Hamilton County and Greater Cincinnati today; and working to transform the public transit of the future.

Elected leaders have publicly recognized Metro for its role in helping create a vibrant community. Hamilton County Commission President Alicia Reece noted Metro’s efforts to partner with small and minority-owned businesses and its ongoing commitment to making sure all of Hamilton County is being served. And she said Metro has the right vision for the community.

“They understand that we must connect our citizens to the jobs, the hospitals, the technology and the entrepreneurship,” Reece said. “And the only way to do that is to have a robust, transformational transportation system.”

Ohio State Sen. Catherine Ingram praised the bold five-phase Reinventing Metro initiative and said she looks forward to future upgrades. Reinventing Metro has been systematically transforming public transit with everything from new routes, additional services, fleet upgrades and much more. Two recent, game-changing components include the launch of the on-demand MetroNow! service in two zones – with many more to come – and the ongoing development of Bus Rapid Transit, including the announcement of the first two corridors that will receive this cutting-edge service.

Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval said Metro continues to impact important regional issues.
“For 50 years, they have been the backbone of our economic growth, of our commitment to racial equity,” he said. “The future of Greater Cincinnati and this region counts on Metro.”
