Jobs Update | Center for Research & Data at the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber

National Employment Change by Month

National Unemployment Rate - Seasonally Adjusted

Effective Federal Funds Rate

Last week the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the jobs report for January and the job growth was astounding. The total increase in employment came in at about 517,000 jobs, much higher than economists expected. Job growth was widespread, with large gains in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and health care. Additionally, job gains in November were revised upward by 34,000, and job gains in December were revised upward by 37,000. The unemployment rate also ticked down to 3.4 percent, a 50 year low. While many economists still believe there is a good chance that we see a recession in the next year, these numbers should temper that expectation a bit. They indicate that job growth is still very strong, despite the Federal Reserve’s continued interest rate increases. The Federal Reserve has indicated that they’ll continue to raise the target federal funds rate, although at a slower pace than we saw for much of 2022.
